Whoppers ‘n Southpaw
Wanna draw out over social people? Buy something strange at the supermarket.
Today I bought cheap beer because I had a craving. I had just left the gym and my blood sugar was low so I picked up some Whoppers.
I immediately drew a response from the guy behind me; “Southpaw and Whoppers, what a combo!”
“Well, it’s not your place to judge my purchase sir,” I thought; but I said “better than needles and cough syrup!”Yes, possibly a bit harsh, but I didn’t feel like being judged.
Then the cashier addressed me saying “well hey sugar! Well my honey, what a combo, you got your chocolate and your beer don’t ya sweetie?”
Yes, freakshow, yes I do, now take my value card and shut up.
Since I can remember, I've been a magnet for odd people. I get the close talkers, animal noise makers, personal space invaders, dirty old men, screamers, talkative homeless, grocery store conversationalists, craigslist crazies, psychopathic spouses--the list goes on. They can pick me out of a room or from across a parking lot as if I were wearing a pink bear-suit.
For the longest time I thought the crazies harassed everyone, but I found, as I related my encounters to friends, that I was unique. I didn't fully accept my condition until my girlfriend began compiling examples and actually coined the phrase "attract the crazy".
Now that I am fully self-aware in this regard it is clear she is right. I have no idea why these loonies on the fringe of societal norms come to me--inviting smile? Vibrant curiosity? Undiscovered hormone? Perhaps they know I'm a constant storyteller and they can see I will depict their little slice of insanity in, at the very least, a humorous light.
Whatever the reason, it is clearly my ongoing plight so on the advice of so many friends, I've decided to devote my humble little Tumblr to the stories, photos and subsequent thoughts on all of the crazy I attract.
